The One Who We Can Trust
The Lord is our refuge and fortress, regardless of life's uncertainties.
As I sit in a local coffee shop writing this Blog, let me be transparent with you as I read Psalm 91:2. The energetic song, "We’ve Got the Beat," is playing loudly, chairs are scraping across the floor and the movement around me is almost chaotic. The thought of grabbing a piece of pumpkin bread crosses my mind – perhaps to ease my distraction – but I overhear a conversation that draws my interest.
Two young women nearby are discussing their anxieties about starting college this fall. Their fears are felt in my core, and I find myself relating deeply to their uncertainty. We've all faced moments where the future seems scary and unpredictable. As someone who thrives on security, I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate life's uncertainties.
In these often-uncertain times, I find peace in the promises of God's Word. Psalm 91:2 offers a powerful reminder: "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." These words are a source of comfort and strength, reminding us of the Lord’s protection and refuge available to us.
My husband, Pastor Dan, and I spend countless hours bringing words to life on stage; yet I realize that Scripture has an even greater power. It transforms, inspires and connects us to the Lord.
What if we take the time to truly see what the Psalmist was saying in this passage?
Let's “picture” this verse together, starting with the word "REFUGE." What images come to mind when you think of a refuge? For me, it brings up thoughts of safety, protection and shelter. Now, imagine the Psalmist declaring, "He is my refuge." Saying it out loud creates a concrete connection between the Lord and us, emphasizing His role as our comfort and protector in times of trouble.
Next, consider the word "FORTRESS." A fortress is a strong, fortified structure designed to protect against enemies. It is the symbol of defense and security. When we say that God is our fortress, we acknowledge Him as our ultimate protector, shielding us from harm and creating a safe haven within His Kingdom.
The foundation of this verse lies in the phrase, "My God, in whom I trust." Trust is fundamental to our relationship with the Lord. It's not just a distant feeling, but a call to action. Trusting in God means surrendering our fears, plans, desires and even our control. It's about placing our faith in His wisdom and care.
So, as I sit here amidst the hustle and bustle, I find peace in knowing that God is my refuge, fortress and the One in whom I trust. And, with that, maybe a piece of pumpkin bread isn't such a bad idea after all.

Book Recommendations:
I have read this book several times and recommend it - Ruth, A Portrait: The Story of Ruth Bell Graham by Patricia Cornwell. Also, Pastor Dan and I are currently on Book 5 of the Chronicles of the Kings (Volumes 1-5) by Lynn Austin.
