We Sow Our Prayers Like Seeds

Beautiful fruit grows from seeds of prayer.

I love gardening. There’s just something about digging in the dirt, sowing seeds, pruning and tending that brings me so much peace. We built a house a few years ago, and our yard was nothing but mud. We’ve been creating the yard of my dreams, one tree at a time ever since. It has been a long process and will continue to be a process that will likely never be done. But now I have flower beds, a small veggie garden and an even smaller herb garden.

It is one of the simple joys in my life to wander my yard in the early mornings with my cup of coffee, watching the slow growth of everything I have planted over the years. I talk to my plants and their Creator about everything on my mind. I monitor their growth and tend to them to ensure that they are healthy and strong.

I often think of how seeds are buried in the dirt away from the light. Dirt is dirty, messy – it’s filled with slimy, squishy things. A good soil will have a fair amount of rotting material. Though decaying, this humus provides vital nutrients to the soil that are necessary for the growth and development of the seed. Down in this dark, dirty, rotting soil, seeds are hidden from sight. But don’t mistake the lack of surface evidence for lack of attention. I assure you; our Creator is always working.

This is the promise God gives us in Matthew 7:7 – that when we ask and keep asking, He will hear our prayers and answer us. This “ask and keep asking, seek and keep seeking, knock and keep knocking” is like tending to a garden. We sow our seeds and then we water them, day after day. We pull out weeds that threaten to choke our seeds. We continually tend to our seeds because we know that they need our care to grow and flourish.

In the same way, when we pray, we “sow” our prayers like seeds.
We tend to our prayer seed by watering it with more prayers, day after day. We pull out weeds of unbelief that threaten to discourage us. It is a persistent work that takes time and effort.

Set your heart on God and be diligent and persistent in your prayers. Trust your life to Him and the purposes that He has for you. He knows what you need and when you need it. You will be amazed at the beautiful and abundant fruit that grows from your seeds of prayer.

Remember, our prayers are like seeds! They do not die in the soil. Our prayers come alive in the soil!

Pray with me: Lord, I know you hear my prayers. Open the eyes and ears of my heart to see beyond what is right in front of me. Increase my faith to believe for miracles. Do the impossible because I trust You with my life. Amen.

Verse to Memorize

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)
