Rest in the Middle of Turmoil
Jesus sees our weariness and will give us rest.
There have been many things that have brought weariness into my life. The two most memorable times are when my mother passed away when I was 11 years old and when my youngest son, Dillon, was diagnosed with cancer at 20 months of age. Such heaviness for a young girl and then a young mom of three boys.
There were times as a child when I felt that I was not going to make it in life without my mother. I had given my heart to Jesus as a child, but the lack of having a mother seemed too much to bear. I grew into an angry teen, and the burdens of life grew very heavy.
Fast forward 12 years and, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I fell to my knees in repentance and rededicated my life to the Lord. All the burdens I carried from the past years were immediately lifted off me. I was free!
Four years later, our doctor told my husband, Todd, and me that our son was very sick and would need three years of chemotherapy. The heaviness of this situation was unbearable. All we could do was give it to Jesus. Every day we were weary, and we just kept giving those daily burdens to Jesus. The result was periods of indescribable peace and the rest that He promised to us. Jesus brought healing and rest to our souls, and He also healed Dillon.
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’” (Matthew 11:28-29)
There are so many things in life that cause weariness and result in heavy burdens. In these verses, Jesus is saying to you…
Come to me, all of you [not just some of you] who are weary and who are carrying things that you should not be carrying. Just give them to me and I will give you rest. I am humble and gentle at heart [I am the best one to take care of you], and I will teach you my ways and your soul will be at rest.
No matter what you are walking through, Jesus is waiting for you to come to Him so that He can give you rest.
Easter is less than one week away. It’s a special time of remembering that Jesus died for us and overcame all sin. He rose from the grave and conquered death! He offers you rest and peace in this troubled world. Don’t be discouraged… He has overcome the world!
John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
And we read in Psalm 62:1-2, “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress. I will never be shaken.”
You may think that your burdens are too heavy, your grief too deep and your life too messed up to go to Him. No matter what you are going through, Jesus waits with open arms to give you His rest and His peace…to give you freedom in Him!
All you need to do is turn to Jesus, and you will find rest.
