Why Me?

No matter what you’re facing, you have the choice to find the good and honor God.

If God promises everything to work out for our good, then why do bad things happen? Why do people experience health issues, financial burdens, suffering or death? Does God really care? Is He concerned with what we are going through?

Many people struggle with this promise. We seem to experience conflict with the concept that God will work everything out for our good, especially when we face difficult life circumstances.

But why do we struggle? Could it be that we are misinterpreting the promise? The promise is not “God plans for you to only experience good.” He is not a magic genie waiting to answer your every wish. His promise is to work EVERYTHING FOR OUR GOOD.

Everything includes health problems, financial burdens, suffering and even death. How can that be? We must remember there is a real and ongoing spiritual battle…where there is an enemy, there is a victor – GOD!

As believers, we are assured that God is working for the ultimate good, which is for Him to be glorified in ALL situations – even the difficult ones.

In 2016, I received a promise from God that He was going to be with me through cancer. It was strange to receive this promise in advance, but I trusted God and prayed for this “not yet” experience. Fast forward to 2019 when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It was a surprise to the doctors, but it was not a surprise to me. Why? Because I had a promise from God!

I chose to trust Him even when I heard the “C” word because He promised to have my back, and I chose to believe Him. During the testing, surgery and recovery, I had many friends share that they were praying for my healing. I truly appreciated and valued their support and prayers, but one day God shared a mission with me that then became my prayer request.

The mission was to take this opportunity to share Him whenever possible. That didn’t mean I ran around preaching Jesus to everyone I encountered, but it did mean that, if a door opened, I desired to honor God’s promise with a promise of my own – the promise to be obedient.

So, when the first doctor who had only met me one time seemed a little confused when I had a calm reaction to the news that I had cancer, I was able to ask, “Do you want to know why I am taking this so well?” To which she quickly said, “Yes,” which opened a door for me to share with her about the promise I had from Jesus.

Another doctor was looking at my paperwork and asked, “What is a Discipleship Director?” which opened the door for me to share what I love to do, which is help people grow in their relationship with Jesus.

The point is, we are not protected from bad – that is not the promise. The promise is that God will work all situations for His good, which means we have to choose to find the good in the bad. We must trust that God loves us more than we can imagine and realize that we are to glorify Him in ALL situations. Hearing that you have cancer is never easy, no matter what the statistics say, but knowing God has promised to work your situation for good and has trusted you with the privilege to honor Him is overwhelming.

What situation are you currently facing, and how will you choose to honor God through it?

We have several groups that can help you take a next step, but our Discover Discipleship Process is always a great way to recalibrate your heart and mind and align your will with God’s will. I hope to see you there!

Verse to Memorize

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28)
