Mission 10 Update

July 2022

Message from Pastor Kristian

Mission 10 is CLA’s strategic approach to expand the Kingdom of God and extend our reach so that all can learn about God’s amazing love! It has been awesome to see so much excitement from so many of you who responded to one or more of the various local, domestic and global opportunities that were made available this year. In fact, most of the opportunities filled up quickly – thank you for wanting to make a meaningful difference…and you are!

Here is a snapshot since Mission 10 was initially launched:

  • 182 people have gone on a missions trip for the first time
  • $3,817,490.53 has been given for missions and missionaries in the U.S. and around the world
  • 15 new short- or long-term missionaries from CLA’s church family have chosen to GO to the missions field

If you are considering participating in one or more of our trips in 2023, please be praying about this now, as well as thinking about necessary considerations, such as time off from work and setting aside funds. The more prepared you can be looking ahead, the more ready you’ll be when trips or projects are announced, because many of our opportunities this year have filled up quickly. Thank you!

Local Missions

Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus

Hands & Feet Ministry is a local organization comprised of dedicated individuals who are working together to be the hands and feet of Jesus in practical ways by serving those less fortunate in downtown Harrisburg. On July 17, six individuals with CLA partnered with the Hands & Feet team to serve food, distribute clothing and bagged lunches, talk and pray with people. The team volunteered downtown and then visited an area near Shipoke along the river informally referred to as “tent city,” where approximately 35 individuals live in tents.

Thanks to those who volunteered in July – while we have two more opportunities coming up in August and September to volunteer with Hands & Feet, both are filled. However, we invite you to learn more about this organization online.

Church Day Out

Wildheart Ministries is focused on restoring and beautifying Allison Hill, an impoverished neighborhood in Harrisburg, while sharing the life-changing power of the Gospel. Join us for Church Day Out on Sunday, August 7 from 2:00-5:00 PM for a special clean-up event with other local and regional churches.

We will be working outside doing activities such as picking up trash, basic landscaping, dumpsite removal and/or planting flowers in the neighborhood. There is still time to sign up to make a difference! Learn more and register.

Supporting Local Students

We wanted to give a shoutout to the families who recently attended Mega Summer Camp at CLA in June. During this event, families raised more than $4,000 through providing school supplies and personal hygiene items and financial giving for the West Shore School District. Thank you for making a tangible difference right here in our community and for helping local students be prepared to start the new school year right!

Domestic Missions

Mission Possible | U.S. Missions

After His crucifixion and before He ascended to Heaven, Jesus gave a final instruction to His disciples (followers): “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere — in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:8

Jesus’ instruction included going to places that were not easy. For instance, it was in Jerusalem that He was crucified. He was rejected in Judea, and Samaritans and Jewish people disliked each other so much that they would do anything to avoid each other. Then Jesus topped it off with “to the ends of the earth” – into the unknown with no limits or boundaries. To some of us, this may feel intimidating. Tell people about Jesus? But that means we must be vulnerable or willing to step out of our comfort zone.

In case you missed it, Jesus offers a promise with this instruction too. He tells us we will receive power through the Holy Spirit. When you accept Jesus into your life, you also receive the Holy Spirit who will guide you, comfort you and order your steps. He will help you to step out of your comfort zone, have courage and do the impossible and be able to share Him!

Belief in Jesus is rapidly declining in the U.S., and your help is needed. You are called by the Lord Himself to share with those you connect with – family, friends, neighbors and those in your community.

Below are a few people connected to CLA who have answered the call to share Jesus as short-term missionaries in the U.S.:

  • Romy Carter – YWAM (Youth with a Mission) – Louisville
  • Amber Martin – YWAM (Youth with a Mission) – Hawaii
  • Cassie Martin – YWAM (Youth with a Mission) – Hawaii

If you feel like God is nudging you to do something more – pray! Be open to Him showing you what to do next. Are you to serve within your community or on a missions trip? Or serve as a short-term missionary (1-24 months) or a full-time missionary? No matter what He is nudging you to do, He will give you the power, courage and finances to do it.

When Devastation Strikes | Jolo, WV

Recently, McDowell and Buchanan Counties in West Virginia got hit with devastating flood waters that destroyed or damaged 101 homes. Hope for McDowell reached out to Convoy of Hope for help, and they quickly responded with much-needed supplies for the affected families.

This September, CLA is sending a team to Jolo, WV to help build a warehouse that will store new household resources (sinks, faucets, toilets, etc.) that will be donated by stores so that Hope for McDowell can meet tangible needs and share the love and compassion of Jesus in situations like this.

On Sunday, July 24, as part of our Missions Moment, we will see an interview that Pastor Kristian did via Zoom with Pastor Charlie Rose from the Family Worship Center in Jolo, WV. Pastor Charlie will share several firsthand updates and relief outcomes from the area's recent flooding, as well as share insights about the upcoming warehouse project.

Global Missions

Until Death Do Us Part | Live Dead Initiative

Americans spend more on pet food and chewing gum than the cause of world missions. Many of us are unaware that there are entire countries with fewer than 10 known believers, and there are almost three billion people (approximately 7,000 people groups) in the world today that do not know Jesus.

Of the 7,000 people groups, around 3,000 of them are unengaged, having no local churches, missionaries or church plants nearby. And those who do believe must meet secretly in homes to teach and learn the Bible. In our world today, these unreached people tend to be found in countries at war, inhospitable climates, dense cities, unstable governments and amid challenging security circumstances.

Motivated by the love of God, Live Dead Missionaries intentionally go where there are no churches and no Gospel message, and where Jesus is not glorified. Committed to making a difference in the statistic that 40 percent of the world lives without access to Christ and mobilizing people to speak, give and go, their strategy is to plant churches among unreached people groups that multiply effectively in their own culture through multi-national teams by partnering with national (indigenous) believers in the wider body of Christ and developing self-governing, self-supporting and self-propagating churches. They realize that fruitful ministry occurs when the mission and the national church serve together.

Currently active in training church planters and launching church planting teams in eight major regions - Africa, the Arab world, Silk Road, Iran, India, Origins, Russia and China - Live Dead missionaries are committed to living and, if needed, dying among the unreached wherever they are found. Why? Because the Great Commission is not a suggestion to a few but a command to us all. It does not happen without going to be on the frontline, in order to share the hope of Jesus and bring glory to His name among every tribe, nation and tongue.

“We commit ourselves to pay whatever price is necessary to reach them (unreached people groups) with the Gospel.” – Live Dead Missionaries

Prayer Requests

Will you join us in prayer?

  • Greenlight Operation | Central PA – Praise that the restoration home was purchased, pray for the volunteers serving and the finances needed for the renovations, and for the women’s lives to be restored through the ministry of this home and especially through Jesus
  • Romy Carter, Amber and Cassie Martin | United States – Pray for opportunities and the boldness to share Jesus, along with being distanced from their families and their finances
  • Live Dead Initiative | Global Missions – Pray for those who feel compelled to go, even if it means giving their life; help them and their families to have peace, to be safe and to share Jesus in the most difficult circumstances
